Winthrop presents literacy push and preliminary NWEA results; leaders plan summer data dive

District administrators laid out a multi-year literacy effort and shared preliminary spring assessment results. Megan White, Director of Teaching and Learning, said the district intends to continue work on research-based literacy practices, invest in professional development, and "contract with a literacy consultant" to work with teachers and the admin team pending a summer data analysis.

Principals described school-level initiatives: Teresa Violet said grade-school teachers regrouped students based on progress monitoring, ran a reading challenge that generated collectively thousands of minutes of reading, and use Fountas and Pinnell and Heggerty assessments in RTI. The middle school (principal referenced as "Principal Veil") added an interdisciplinary "academic extensions" class and emphasized reading for meaning rather than skimming. High school leadership reported the strongest outcomes: Megan White said the high school percent above the 40th percentile was 77 this spring (compared with about 80 in prior years), and the district plans a summer retreat to analyze cohorts and plan targeted interventions.

Board members asked how the district engages parents and uses multiple data sources; administrators said parent engagement happens in Title I events and building-specific communications, and that progress monitoring and classroom grades are used for early intervention. The district will spend the summer reviewing testing and cohort data and will refine plans for consulting support, intervention allocation, and next year's workshop days.
