Advisory board recommends closing Jay County Country Living; commissioners plan joint meeting with council

Cindy Bracy, chair of the Jay County Country Living Advisory Board, presented the board’s June 9 recommendation that the facility be closed as a county home in a timely manner and that the advisory board remain in place while options are pursued. Bracy said the board has engaged community developers including the Jay County Development Corporation and the ECI Regional Planning District and has explored options including transfer, nonprofit formation and repurposing parts of the property for tiny homes.
Bracy read a prepared statement from advisory-board member Christina Nixon and noted they had investigated adding the facility to the National Historic Register. She told commissioners the board had been working on the issue for 15 months and said candidly, “the hole was way deeper than could have been imagined.” Director Stacey Johnson said the facility currently has 18 residents after two left and reported three requests for admission since the advisory recommendation; she urged caution about pausing all admissions because some people have no other options. Commissioners agreed to schedule a joint session with the county council to sort options and tabled the discussion until that meeting; no formal transfer or closure plan was adopted at this time.
