Planning staff asked the Cumberland County Planning Commission to set a public hearing on Conditional Use Permit CEP-26-03 for the Cumberland Energy Center, a proposed dual‑fuel combined‑cycle power station on eight parcels in the county's northwestern portion.
"Staff respectfully request that the planning commission set this conditional use permit for public hearing," planning staff member Miss Johnson said, noting the application had been deemed complete and that staff and legal counsel were still drafting conditions. Johnson directed residents to the project page posted by staff for transparency: coverlandcounty.virginia.gov/343/cumberlandenergycenterproject.
A commissioner moved that the commission set CEP-26-03 for public hearing at a special meeting rather than at the next regular meeting. The motion proposed Aug. 31 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cumberland Middle and Hospital Cafetorium; the motion was seconded and approved by voice/roll call. Commissioners who answered during the roll call on that vote included Matt Seal, Hubert Allen, Steve Rosen and William Lippitt, all recorded in favor.
Several residents who spoke during the public-comment period urged a fuller review of the proposal's environmental, health and land‑use implications. Miss Johnson said staff and legal counsel will draft conditions for the commission and the Board of Supervisors to consider prior to any final decisions. The special public hearing will give the public another formal opportunity to comment.
