Van Buren County authorizes participation in Purdue opioid settlement, establishes LG Abatement Fund
Summary
The board approved Resolution #07-28-2025B authorizing the county to enter the Purdue Direct Settlement and to deposit any local government (LG) Abatement Shares into a separately designated LG Abatement Fund; roll call vote was unanimous (Meek, Waugh, House).
County Auditor Lisa Plecker informed the board that a settlement had been reached with Purdue Pharma L.P. and the Sackler family. On motion by Supervisor House, seconded by Supervisor Waugh, the board adopted Resolution #07-28-2025B authorizing Van Buren County to execute the Subdivision Participation and Release form and other documents necessary to participate in the Purdue Direct Settlement.
The resolution and the Allocation Memorandum of Understanding (Allocation MOU) require that Iowa Opioid Funds be divided with 50% to the State (Iowa Abatement Share) and 50% to Participating Local Governments (LG Abatement Share) net of certain fees and costs; participating local governments must deposit LG Abatement Shares into a separate "LG Abatement Fund," use funds only for approved opioid-related expenditures occurring after the Allocation MOU effective date, and comply with annual reporting and audit requirements.
