Town staff told the council they identified a compromised manhole on West Montana Road connected to a 36-inch outfall pipe and have plugged the pipe to stop continued discharges to the Intracoastal Waterway.
"We immediately went into action, plugged the pipe, entered into the protocol for the environmental agencies as well as started pumping operations so that there would be no more contamination in the intercoastal," a public-services representative said, adding that staff expect to remain in protocol for some months while repairs and monitoring continue.
Council members and staff noted the location of the conflict in the road (Lantana Road at Forestry) complicates permanent repairs because it is a major arterial and road closure would disrupt traffic. The town said the immediate source has been addressed but that monitoring and required public notices will continue under state health requirements.
