On first reading the Town Council approved Ordinance O‑03‑2025, which grants Florida Public Utilities Company (FPUC) a new 30‑year, nonexclusive franchise to sell, distribute and transmit natural, manufactured or mixed gas in Lantana. Staff said the ordinance replaces a long‑standing 1990 ordinance and maintains a 6% franchise fee provision that brings roughly $28,000 a year in franchise revenues to the town.
A municipal representative speaking for the franchise noted that the contract includes an option to match a higher rate should FPUC agree to higher terms elsewhere, and requires FPUC to maintain a minimum of $5,000,000 in liability insurance. The item moved on first reading with unanimous council support (5‑0). The ordinance will return for second reading as required by municipal procedure.
