Council OKs three easements for Florida Power & Light undergrounding project

The Lantana Town Council voted unanimously April 28 to grant three easements to Florida Power & Light (FPL) to support the utility’s storm‑secure underground program. The easements cover locations on Iris (southwest corner near the tennis court), South Lake (southeast corner near the playground) and Beachcurve (near the station). Council authorized the town manager to execute the easement agreements and any amendments.

An FPL representative said the larger program is expected to convert about 900 residents to underground service across seven subprojects in the municipality. Representatives described construction sequencing—community outreach, permitting/engineering, then construction—and said work would likely begin within one to two years after permitting and outreach conclude. “We are already in deep outreach within the community,” the FPL presenter said.

Council members asked technical and aesthetic questions: how lines and transformers would be placed (primary cable in the right‑of‑way, transformer boxes placed on private property with easements), whether driveways would be disrupted (company said directional boring is the primary construction method to minimize surface impacts), and how many transformers to expect (FPL estimated roughly one transformer per six homes on average). The council asked staff to coordinate outreach and to authorize the town manager to finalize documents. The motion to grant the easements passed 5‑0.
