Youth Services: training for juvenile-care changes, safety workshops and recruitment push

Joann Moriarty, Youth Services director, told the Suffield Social Services Commission that “The State of Connecticut is changing how juvenile arrest are handled at a community level which requires extensive training for Youth Services.” The department is arranging staff training and is actively recruiting teens, especially seniors at Suffield High School, for the Suffield Sidekicks program.
Moriarty outlined several upcoming programs aimed at safety and prevention: a free Situational Awareness and Personal Safety Workshop for kids at the HIVE Empowerment Center in Windsor Locks on May 16, and a Safe Sitter Babysitting Safety Course at the Suffield Ambulance Association on April 25. She said Youth Services worked with the superintendent’s office to distribute an on-demand link to the Screenagers documentary district-wide to help families set boundaries around technology. Moriarty also reported that the Suffield Prevention Council now has nine regular members and the Youth Leadership Council will visit McAlister students on April 27 to read and discuss friendship and kindness.
