Kane County planners voted May 13 to deny a temporary-use permit request to host up to five RVs on Lot 6-145 in the Vermillion Cliffs area for Memorial Day weekend, citing permitting and neighborhood-impact concerns.
Staff told commissioners they had found three electrical pedestals installed without permits and that the health department had no septic permit for RV service at the site. Staff also reported two dispatch calls related to separate incidents. The applicant, who identified herself as Jen, said the planned event was a private family gathering for her husband's 50th birthday and that they had an approved county fire pit and would be hosting friends and family for a few days.
Commissioners pressed the applicant on frequency and prior use. Commissioner Mason Haycock (S5) said repeated gatherings combined with installation of three pedestals suggested intent to exceed a temporary use. “My experience is… once you have more than one independent witness reporting similar things, that carries a great deal of evidentiary value,” Haycock said. The commission agreed that hosting repeated RV gatherings can reach the threshold requiring a zone change rather than a temporary permit and moved to deny the request based on facts and findings in the staff report. The motion was seconded and carried on a voice vote.
