Board members discussed whether to temporarily relax some short-term rental restrictions to accommodate visitor demand tied to World Cup 2026. Staff noted Smithville has limited hotels but some short-term-rental capacity; examples from other towns showed temporary adjustments (timed May 1–July 31) to permit more hosts during event windows.
"We have seen from other communities that they are temporarily lifting their short term rental restrictions, anywhere from their regulations to the number that's allowed," a city presenter (speaker 5) said while reviewing local constraints and possible timing. Planning and zoning will take up short-term rental policy at its next meeting and any ordinance or rule changes would return to the board for formal action.
