VOCA coordinator reports rising caseloads; FY2 funding to begin July 1

Devin Shakespear, who presented the VOCA grant update, said all first-year VOCA funds have been spent and the program’s second year begins July 1 with $21,000 allocated to cover a portion of her hourly wage and benefits.
Shakespear reported an increased caseload: “261 clients served this year up until mid-May, compared to 209 clients last year,” and noted that domestic-violence-related cases rose “to 91 clients this year compared to 54 last year.” She said the majority of services this year fell under criminal-justice help — system information, referrals, and help with protective orders — totaling just under 1,300 services.
Shakespear said the office plans to reapply for VOCA funding next spring to continue services. The update was presented during the May 12 Kane County Board of Commissioners meeting.
