Vernonia robotics team advances to Spark Invitational after strong regional showing

Costanzo (speaker 10) reported that Vernonia's robotics team of about nine middle- and high-school students competed at a Hillsboro regional qualifier and finished fourth in qualifications. The team captained an alliance, advanced through part of the double-elimination rounds and missed direct state qualification by two points after a close loss.
"We wound up being 2 points away from going directly to state," Costanzo said, summarizing the match outcomes and noting the team will pursue qualification at the Spark Invitational in Philomath, a two-day second-chance tournament. He credited student leaders including Sam Burton (primary designer), Ben Davis and others for robot design, drive and programming.
Board members congratulated the students and encouraged community attendance at upcoming events. The board heard that this is the program's second year in a smaller league to improve competitiveness and that students and staff will continue to refine design and strategy ahead of the Philomath invitational.
