Sedgwick County adopts 2024 Mechanical Code; staff outlines implementation and training

The Sedgwick County Board voted to adopt the 2024 International Mechanical Code and local amendments after a staff presentation and a short public comment period.
Chris Labrum described the Mechanical Code as the safety standard for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems and said the county proposed eight amendments for consistency and administrative updates. "So, the mechanical code will be effective as soon as it's published, but you'll have that zone between now and January," Labrum said, explaining that staff will allow use of the 2024 code in projects where appropriate while keeping a Jan. 1 implementation date for building codes.
During the public comment window, Andrew Crane urged attention to accessibility: "Including apartments, need to be ADA accessible ... that includes closets need to be big enough to roll around in," Crane said, raising accessibility concerns for remodels and new units. Labrum acknowledged accessibility references elsewhere in the adoption package and said ADA-related language is part of the local amendments.
The board adopted the mechanical code by roll-call vote and staff outlined plans for outreach, training sessions and ICC instructor–led classes for designers and contractors before the effective date.
