Board adopts 2024 International Existing Building Code to ease remodel rules

The Sedgwick County Commission voted to adopt the 2024 International Existing Building Code (IEBC) and local amendments after a staff presentation and a public hearing that drew no speakers.
Chris Labrum told commissioners the IEBC governs commercial remodel and renovation work and is designed to be less restrictive than the full International Building Code to allow feasible repairs and updates to existing structures. "If someone is willing to add sprinklers to an existing building then it will absolve them from most of the code upgrade requirements," Labrum said, describing trade-offs owners and designers may take.
Labrum said the county previously adopted the IEBC in 2020 and that the current package moves from 71 to 85 local amendments largely to remove references to energy and floodplain provisions the county handles separately. After a short commissioner exchange and no public comment, the board adopted the resolution by roll-call vote.
