Township engineering staff reported that an inspection on May 21 found the Barley Sheaf Road bridge in poor condition: scour holes, undermined supports, sections of stone and concrete washed out, sinking road surface and corroded steel beams with metal loss. Because temporary 15-ton limit postings were not being observed, staff closed the bridge for safety.
The engineer described an emergency repair scope—backfilling scour holes with concrete, filling voids at abutments and footings, and an alternate to clean and paint exposed beams—and said the work is expected to take about 60 days once contractors mobilize. "The inspection demonstrated that the bridge was in poor condition and needed immediate repairs," the engineer said, and noted a full replacement is being recommended depending on pricing. Staff will solicit proposals and expects to present recommendations at the board's second August meeting.
