Local resident questions whether renaming a street for MLK will advance his legacy

Bruce Cook of Ward 1 spoke during public comment about a proposal to name a street for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He said his concern is whether a renaming would meaningfully advance King's ideals.
Cook said he has "no objection to naming something after doctor King" but warned against mistaking signage for substantive change. "Naming a street after him will not accomplish that," he said, and urged the council and community to remember Kings message rather than only awarding titles or monuments.
Cook closed by urging the community to study King's words and to avoid bitterness and division. The remark was delivered during the public-comment period; no council action on a street-renaming ordinance was taken at this meeting.
