"Now therefore I, Peter Schwartzman, mayor of the city of Galesburg, Illinois, do hereby proclaim May 23 and 05/24/2025 as poppy days in the city of Galesburg," Schwartzman said as he presented the proclamation.
Cindy Unthank of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Auxiliary thanked the council and described the Auxiliary's local work, saying the group distributes poppies at local businesses and that funds go to assist veterans. "All monies collected support veterans only," Unthank said, urging residents to wear a poppy in honor of those who served.
The proclamation noted local store displays and volunteer distribution on May 23 and 24; Unthank told the council the local American Legion and Auxiliary continue to meet and support veterans despite not having a physical post building. The presentation closed with a request that citizens purchase poppies to support veterans' rehabilitation and local nursing-home programs.
The proclamation was received by the council during the meeting's opening ceremonial items; no formal council action beyond presentation was required.
