Trappe Council votes to send letter supporting Talbot County accommodations tax increase

The Trappe Town Council voted to send a letter supporting Talbot County’s proposed increase in the county accommodations tax from 4% to 6%. Commissioner Water Chase moved to send the letter; the motion carried with Commissioner Jeremy Newnam abstaining and all other members voting yes.
Cassandra Vanhooser presented Talbot County’s code for the accommodations tax and explained the county currently charges 4% and is considering 6%. "At this time the County is charging a 4% tax and they are considering increasing the tax to 6%." The council discussed that the county retains collections and sends towns the proceeds minus a 5% service fee.
The motion to send a letter of support was recorded as: Newnam — abstain; Sullivan — yes; Schmidt — yes; Potter — yes; Chase — yes. President Schmidt confirmed staff will transmit the council's letter to the Talbot County Council.
