Mayor: $500,000 state appropriation will renovate justice center into community hub

Mayor Glenda McDonald announced that the Highland Park Police Department will receive state funding to renovate the city’s justice center.
"The Highland Park Police Department will receive $500,000 from the state of Michigan under their, their budget to now renovate the justice center," McDonald said. She credited State Representative Tanya Myers Phillips for advocating for the appropriation and thanked her for the work on the bill or budget item.
McDonald described the renovated facility as serving several functions: holding space, court-related space at the far end of the building, and a community-engagement area for meetings, trainings and mental-health resources. She said an organization she named as "D win" will help connect people with resources and supports inside the facility. The mayor said existing mini-stations, including a mini-station near Glories Market, will be moved into the renovated building so the city will operate "under one roof."
McDonald said the appropriation funds are not available until October and projected the renovated space could open to the public around the start of the next year. She asked residents to thank Representative Tanya Myers Phillips for securing the appropriation.
