City staff seeks referral to planning commission to rezone Commerce Way parcels to light industrial

City staff asked the council to authorize a referral to the planning commission to rezone parcels at 9850 Commerce Way and 1651 Roberts Road from PUD/OD to light industrial to match surrounding warehouse uses and open opportunities for businesses.
Councilmember Nicole Miller introduced a city-initiated rezoning request for two parcels at 9850 Commerce Way and 1651 Roberts Road (item 26-255) and asked staff to explain the proposal. Dana Gray of community development said the parcels contain two existing warehouse buildings and are currently under a PUD with an office-distribution base zoning that has prevented some warehouse businesses from locating there.
"So this is an effort to clean up that area...the existing area is majority light industrial. So we would like to rezone to light industrial just to provide more opportunities for that lot that is the same as the surrounding area," Gray said. Council members asked clarifying questions and agreed the item could be placed on the consent agenda or referred to the planning commission for public hearing and formal review.
Staff framed the change as correcting a mismatch between permitted uses and actual, long-standing industrial activity in the area rather than introducing new land-use types.
