"Now, therefore, I, Peter Schwartzman, mayor of the city of Galesburg, Illinois, proclaim Friday, 04/25/2025 as Arbor Day in the city of Galesburg and urge all citizens to plant trees to promote the well-being of this and future generations," Schwartzman said as he presented the proclamation. The mayor noted Galesburg's designation as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
Two volunteers accepted thanks from the council and described the effort informally: one thanked the mayor and council for funding and singled out a colleague, Tom, for leadership of the planting effort. Council members applauded the volunteer work and linked the proclamation to broader community beautification efforts, including Project 350’s goal of increasing neighborhood tree canopy.
The proclamation cites environmental and economic benefits of urban trees — reducing erosion, moderating temperature, improving air quality and enhancing property values — and encourages residents to participate in planting and stewardship activities. The mayor invited residents to contact city volunteers or staff to get involved with plantings.
