TIDE Committee returns to plan for turtle-shaped informational signs, EBLTP recommends four locations

The TIDE Committee on March 4 revisited a pilot program to post turtle-shaped signs that would outline sea turtle protection rules along Edisto Beach. Committee member Camille Lemon telephoned Kristi Summers, the current permit holder for the Edisto Beach Loggerhead Turtle Project, who recommended siting signs at Beach Access 1, Beach Access 8, Beach Access 20 and at a location between Beach Accesses 32–35.
Ms. Summers also noted the first three sections of the beach—labeled in the discussion as Turtle Section A (Accesses 1–4), Section B (4–8) and Section C (8–16)—typically experience the highest turtle volume, a detail the committee said will guide any pilot placement. The committee previously discussed installing five (5) or more signs at strategic access points and will next determine which sea turtle protection rules to display on the signs with guidance from Ms. Summers.
Vice Chair Edye Graves suggested creating turtle-shaped magnets, modeled after the signs, for distribution to local realty companies to expand outreach without adding permanent signage. Chair Gary Cantrell displayed a photograph of Beach Access 33 to show the current number of signs at some accesses and cautioned the group against concentrating too many signs in any single area. The committee will return to the item at a future meeting to finalize wording and placement plans.
