District highlights UDO standards and new city–county Safe Routes working group

Transportation staff explained that the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) sets on-the-ground standards (streetscape, sidewalk width) relevant to school access and described a new city–county bike/walk plan and a Safe Routes to School working group that includes DPS, city and county partners to coordinate infrastructure needs.
A commissioner asked whether the Unified Development Ordinance applies only to new development or also to redevelopment; Miss Brookshire responded that the UDO contains specific, on-the-ground standards that can apply to redevelopment projects. "The UDO is something that's very specific on the ground... it's like the streetscape. It's the width of the sidewalk," she said, framing the ordinance as a tool for shaping built environment outcomes.
Brookshire also described a newly formed Safe Routes to School working group that meets monthly with quarterly partner meetings and includes the city transportation department, Durham Public Schools, county transportation, public health, Bike Durham and CDOT. The group intends to coordinate education, encouragement and infrastructure conversations so city and county planning better support safe student travel.
