The Durham Board of County Commissioners adopted a proclamation recognizing Dr. John Hope Franklin and Aurelia Whittington Franklin for contributions to scholarship, civil-rights history and horticulture and proclaimed March 2025 as John Hope and Aurelia Whittington Franklin Orchid Appreciation Day in Durham County.
Vice Chair Dr. Lee read the proclamation noting Franklin's role as a historian and professor at North Carolina Central University and cited his authorship of From Slavery to Freedom. Assistant County Manager Tammy Hall spoke in support of the recognition and said she has a personal connection to the Franklins: "I do not see Carter here, but what I will say is he is very, very passionate about the work of the Franklins," Hall said, and thanked commissioners for acknowledging the family's contributions.
Commissioners welcomed community volunteers who helped bring forward the proclamation and noted that recognition would tie into upcoming events, including a local symposium on African American legacy in gardening.
