Durham commissioners proclaim February 2025 Black History Month and honor 2015 Chapel Hill victims

Commissioner Michelle Burton read a Durham County proclamation declaring February 2025 as Black History Month, noting the month’s role in celebrating African American contributions and encouraging community observances. "During Black History Month, the rich histories and achievements of African Americans in the United States and in Durham are celebrated," Burton read.
Dr. Brent Lewis (Office of Equitable Well‑Being) and Attorney Nisha Williams (chair, Durham Racial Equity Commission) thanked the board for the proclamation and emphasized the role of local commissions in equity work. The board also read and adopted a resolution honoring Diya Shadi Barakat, Yousir Mohammad Abu Salha and Razan Mohammad Abu Salha on the 10th anniversary of their deaths on Feb. 10, 2015; commissioners described memorial events and screenings scheduled that week and recognized organizations (the Lighthouse Project and related memorial funds) continuing the victims' legacy.
