Board completes second reading of broad policy revisions, discusses gender-neutral restrooms

The Chawanakee board completed a second reading of a large package of policy revisions on Jan. 14 that covered nondiscrimination, Title IX procedures, employee notifications, student discipline, technology use and other governance items.
Superintendent Jamie Nino led the review of the policies and noted the district's obligations under state and federal rules. Trustee Elisabeth Parish asked specifically about provision of gender-neutral bathrooms; Nino said the district "will have to provide them" and said there is already one at Hillside, North Fork and Spring Valley. The board voted to approve the second reading in a recorded motion.
The revisions update multiple policies to align with statutory requirements and best practices; staff will publish updated policy language and inform schools of any operational changes required for compliance.
