Chawanakee board accepts FY 2023/24 audit, approves corrective actions after three findings

The Chawanakee Unified School District board accepted an independent audit of fiscal year 2023–24 and approved corrective actions at its Jan. 14 meeting.
Melissa Kielpinski, chief business officer, said the audit by Borchardt, Corona, Faeith & Zakarian found the district's financial statements "present fairly, in all material respects." She reported three findings: "One was an attendance error at Continuation School which caused a decrease of $949.58," a misclassification of short-term independent study at Minarets that shifted ADA reporting (with no net cost), and classroom teacher salaries reported under 55 percent of expenditures — for which an exemption was approved by MCSOS on Oct. 2, 2024. The board approved the audit report on a motion by Barbara Bigelow, seconded by Jack Thornburg.
Trustees also approved a motion to adopt corrective steps recommended by staff to address the findings; the corrective-actions motion was made by Jack Thornburg and seconded by Elisabeth Parish and passed unanimously among members present. The board recorded no fiscal exposure from the ADA reclassification and noted the district worked with the county office to secure the teaching-salary exemption.
Next steps include implementing the corrective measures outlined by staff and monitoring changes during the 2024–25 fiscal year; the district will report progress in subsequent financial updates to the board.
