Board approves CalPERS Section 218 resolution and later authorizes Social Security coverage process

On August 10, 2022, the Board approved Resolution 22/23‑01 authorizing an employee election under CalPERS Section 218 so that positions covered by CalPERS could also be covered by federal Social Security if employees elected it. Deputy Superintendent Aaron Heinz said the resolution followed CalPERS guidance and was preferable to litigation over the issue.
On June 21, 2023, the Board subsequently approved Resolution 22/23‑06 to authorize execution of CalPERS’ application and agreement formalizing the Social Security coverage election process for employees. Board minutes indicate the resolutions were presented as administrative recommendations and carried with unanimous support in recorded votes (with one absence noted at the June meeting).
