Board approves Crisis Prevention Institute partnership to expand staff de-escalation training

The board unanimously approved a partnership with the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) to provide staff training in de-escalation and trauma-informed crisis prevention. Student Services staff presented CPI as an evidence-based, nonviolent approach to reduce injury risk and to equip staff with techniques for identifying, preventing and responding to crisis behaviors. Trustee Jessie Hutchens moved to approve and Trustee Seth Waltner seconded the motion.
Student Services explained the district's goal is to ensure staff are trained in obligations and legalities around de-escalation and to adopt trauma-informed practices. The minutes record: "This nonviolent program teaches people how to identify, prevent, and respond to crisis." The board approved the partnership as presented; training schedule, participant lists, and costs were not recorded in the minutes.
