North Las Vegas trustees adopt makerspace policy, require certification for 3D printers and Cricut machines

The North Las Vegas Library District Board of Trustees voted Nov. 25 to adopt a makerspace policy that governs public use of in-library equipment including 3D printers and Cricut machines.
Shelly Alexander said the policy includes eligibility requirements, age- and supervision-related rules, user responsibilities and a certification process that will require patrons to attend a staff-taught class and pass a 10-question quiz before using the equipment. "Staff will always be available to assist them, but they'll be able to go in and either use the Cricut machines or the 3D printers basically on their own," Alexander said.
Trustee Kelly moved to approve the makerspace policy and Trustee Armstrong seconded; the motion passed on a voice vote. Staff indicated they plan certification classes and staff training in December with a public rollout planned in January.
