Chawanakee Unified authorizes ZESBI grant application; district reports 9 diesel, 4 EV buses

The Chawanakee Unified School District board authorized staff to apply for the California Energy Commission and California Air Resources Board Zero‑Emission School Bus and Infrastructure (ZESBI) grant at the Aug. 13 meeting. The application would support replacement of two diesel school buses and associated infrastructure.
Director of Maintenance, Operations and Transportation Nick Von Flue told trustees that the district "currently have[s] a total of 9 diesel buses and 4 EV buses" and that more charging stations will be required if the fleet expands. Trustee Seth Waltner asked about existing chargers and readiness; Von Flue said the district will need to add additional charging infrastructure as buses convert to electric. The motion to authorize the application was made by Trustee Seth Waltner, seconded by Trustee Elisabeth Parish, and passed unanimously.
