North Las Vegas library board authorizes $15,000 summer reading grant application

The North Las Vegas Library District Board of Trustees voted Nov. 25 to authorize submission of a Nevada State Library summer reading grant application for approximately $15,000, with a 10% local match to be covered through staff time and in-kind resources from fund 00290.
Shelly Alexander, who said she was filling in for Director Lewis, presented the proposal and described planned programming that would "encourage library visits, engagement, and participating in the summer learning challenge." She said the grant would fund performers and educators, STEM instructors and storytellers, Grab-and-Go learning kits for all ages and promotional materials including staff T-shirts. "One new thing that we are going to be including this year ... is trading cards," Alexander said, describing a staff-proposed collectible card series to promote library services and resources.
Trustees moved and seconded the motion to approve the grant application and authorized the library director or designee to execute contracts, purchase orders and necessary administrative amendments if an award is made. The motion passed on a voice vote.
Why it matters: the grant would support summer programs and outreach intended to boost visits and learning among children and adults in North Las Vegas. The board authorized staff to pursue the award and to manage required agreements and budget adjustments if the district receives funding.
