Council adopts ordinance updating city emergency-management code and creating Emergency Management Council

On final reading the City Council voted to adopt ordinance No. 3,257, repealing and replacing chapter 2.32 of the North Las Vegas Municipal Code. Deputy Fire Chief Ben Erickson presented the ordinance as an update to align city policy with state and federal standards and to strengthen operational coordination.
Erickson highlighted four principal changes: a revised definition of emergency management consistent with NRS 414.020; clarified duties for the emergency management director (including an oath of office); updated succession and continuity language reflecting the city's growth and changed job titles; and the creation of an Emergency Management Council comprised of key departmental and partner representatives to guide preparedness and planning. “The council comprised of key members of our organization will help build a stronger culture and preparedness and coordination across departments and community partners,” Erickson said.
Councilmembers asked whether new training would be required; Erickson said the primary change is organizational—establishing the council and identifying roles—rather than adding blanket new training requirements for all staff, though identified council members will be expected to complete incident-command-system classes appropriate to their roles. The ordinance was moved, seconded and passed; the council did not record a roll-call tally in the public remarks.
