Julie Houchins, a United Way of Southern Nevada representative, told the North Las Vegas Education Advisory Committee that United Way supports the Nevada Ready State pre‑k Tuition Scholarships, a free tuition scholarship for qualifying 4‑year‑old children.
"United Way supports the Nevada Ready State pre k Tuition Scholarships, which is a free tuition scholarship for qualifying 4 year old children, whose family meets the 250% federal poverty guidelines," Houchins said. She explained income waivers are available for children with an active individualized education plan (IEP) and for English‑language learners.
Houchins said the scholarship covers a 25‑hour‑per‑week program offered at 57 local childcare centers across the Las Vegas area, including centers in North Las Vegas. She told members that the program has 1,900 seats available throughout Southern Nevada and that it runs through June 30; families can find partners and application forms on United Way's website.
Committee members asked about application support and outcome tracking. Houchins said individual centers help families complete applications and that United Way uses Clark County School District's Infinite Campus data portal to track participating children's progress into elementary grades. "So it's shared annually with the Department of Ed," she said.
The committee did not take formal action on the program but heard the presentation to inform outreach and to consider ways the city and schools might help publicize eligibility and enrollment pathways.
The committee is expected to follow up during future meetings about coordination between the scholarship program, city outreach and local schools' enrollment efforts.
