Parks director reports strong turnout at World Cup watch parties; fireworks event planned

Brian Tobin, the director of Parks and Recreation, updated the committee on recent summer programming and crowd estimates. "We estimate about 1,800 people" at the Downtown Park watch party, he said, and later reported a slightly larger turnout at the Scheels Overland Park Soccer Complex: "We had about 2,700 people, a little over."
Tobin described logistical issues and amenities for these events: shade limitations on some soccer-field watch-party sites, use of multiple TVs on fields, family games arranged by Shields Sporting, and collaboration with downtown merchants and the downtown Olympic partnership team. He encouraged residents to attend the upcoming Star-Spangled Spectacular at Corporate Woods and noted the Farmers Market at Clock Tower Landing will operate the same morning before evening festivities.
Committee members thanked staff for the event work and raised no objections. Tobin also noted the parks department will continue planning community programming and that the next large watch party is scheduled for July 11 at Clock Tower Landing.
