Planning Commission renews Strong Barbell Club special permit after parking mitigation

The Planning Commission approved a five‑year renewal of the Strong Barbell Club’s special use permit after the club described steps taken to mitigate earlier parking problems. The facility operates training and strength‑sport events and previously drew complaints when larger meets overflowed onto Merriam Drive and adjacent neighborhood streets.

Club co‑owner JP Price described the gym’s community role and said the business has hosted power‑lifting and strongman events for years. "We provide general memberships while offering also personal training for people who need some more guidance," Price said. He told the commission the club uses roughly 15–50 parking spaces on site for regular operations and had secured off‑site parking agreements (Interstate Battery and other nearby lots) for larger events.

Operations manager Ethan Harak described concrete steps taken after earlier complaints: securing written permission from neighboring lots for overflow parking, deploying parking attendants and clear signage, coordinating with the Overland Park Police Department, and improving social‑media notices for event attendees. "We were able to house about 75 cars very comfortably in our lot and an interstate battery, and we, still had some spots," Harak said about a recent meet.

Commissioners commended the club for being proactive; Commissioner Strauss said the applicants had been constructive in responding to concerns. Commissioner Gregory moved to approve SUP2026‑0012 for five years with stipulations A–C; the motion passed 9–0. The item will be considered by City Council on Aug. 3.

The club said it will continue to coordinate with police and neighboring property owners to avoid future parking violations.
