During board comments, a committee member announced that Challenger Sports — an outside soccer camp operator — will use Jesse James Park for weeklong soccer camps. The member described Challenger Sports as an established organization with instructors flown in for seasonal camps and said the city will guarantee a minimum number of participants and receive a small nominal fee per child.
A committee member said Challenger Sports will operate camps in mid-July and that staff expect to register a couple of hundred participants: "So it's a win win for everybody. We get to make a little bit of revenue and, offer something basically at no cost to the city." Members also noted the Magical Nights parade is Dec. 14 and that staff will preview additional proposed programs in January, pending budget approval.
No board vote was required for the announcement; staff will continue program planning and finalize details through the budget process.
