Parks staff briefed the board on a trail-to-Mac Porter project that would connect town trails with a 10‑foot-wide path routed under I‑35 into Mac Porter Park. Staff said the design includes beacon crossings at key crossings near the senior center and that the underpass connection will keep users off the road for safer crossing.
"It will the trail itself sidewalk, 10 foot wide sidewalk will go underneath I‑35, and then we'll go into Mac Porter Park and connect to our trail," Parks staff said. The board was told meeting materials and an online public meeting remain available on the City of Kearney website under the news section. Staff named Shelley Daniel as the public works director who has experience working with MoDOT and handling grants for comparable projects.
Board members described the connection as improving walkability and safety; staff said some work is grant-funded and that more details will be provided in future updates.
