What Chamblee's proposed 7.25 mill rate means for homeowners
Summary
City staff said the proposed 7.25 mills would raise the average homeowner's city tax by about $275.60 before exemptions, and about $213.94 after the $50,000 homestead exemption (roughly $18 per month). Staff also noted county and school levies make up the bulk of most tax bills.

City staff told the council that, based on an average single-family home value of about $525,000 in Chamblee, the advertised 7.25-mill rate would raise the average city portion of property taxes by roughly $275.60 per year before exemptions. "When you account for the $50,000 homestead exemption on homesteaded properties, the true average impact is approximately $213 and 94, cents per year or $18 per month," the staff member said.
Staff reminded the council that the city's millage is only one component of a resident's full tax bill: DeKalb County and DeKalb County Schools make up the vast majority of most individuals' tax liabilities. The staff presentation also noted Chamblee has a $50,000 homestead exemption and a 100% homestead exemption for seniors, which alter the net impact for qualifying households.
