Steubenville council holds executive session on police chief appointment; no action taken

Steubenville Mayor Ralph Petrella called the special City Council meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. and, after roll call, Council member Walker moved "to go to executive session to consider the appointment, employment, and compensation for the position of Chief of Police." Council member McManamon seconded the motion, which passed on a roll-call vote (all ayes). The chambers were cleared for the executive session.
After the executive session the chambers were reopened. Mayor Petrella confirmed with Assistant Law Director Bernie Battistel that there would be no vote on a new police chief that evening. The council did not take any public action to appoint or set compensation for the police chief during the open meeting. The matter remains under consideration by council and will return for future action if council chooses to proceed.
