City manager proposes small property-tax cut as SEV rises

City Manager Michael Stelmaszek told the Kingsford City Council that increases in State Equalized Value and the addition of seven new homes on Evergreen Court give the city room to support a small reduction in the property-tax millage.
Stelmaszek proposed a 0.20-mill reduction that would set the city rate at 17.800 mills for the coming fiscal year and attached a millage breakdown and proposed budget resolution to the manager's report. He asked council members to review the materials and offered to meet with any member who wanted more detail. The council voted to receive and place the manager's report on file.
The manager framed the proposal as cautious and contingent on final assessments: "With recent years' increases in State Equalized Values (SEV) our city has been experiencing and the pending addition of seven new homes on Evergreen Court, I believe the city can support a slight reduction in the 18-mil assessment our citizens and businesses pay each year on property taxes." Council did not act on the proposed millage during the meeting and will consider the item during the budget process.
