The Alliance City Board of Park Commissioners discussed next steps for repairing storm-related damage to the City Mausoleum, including accepting the insurance company's current offer and pursuing additional fundraising.
Niki McIlvain recommended "proceeding with the claim, accepting the insurance company's current offer, and initiating fundraising to address the remaining funding gap and ensure proper restoration," citing Koon's Restoration's recommendation. Esther Whiteleather reported that "the insurance company's initial offer of $40,000 has increased to $140,000," and noted Friends of the Park has committed to matching that amount. McIlvain said she plans to submit a $100,000 grant application to the Greater Alliance Foundation; together the board discussed that securing approximately $300,000 would provide a solid foundation for necessary repairs.
Kim Cox told the board the Administration will handle settlement of the claim. Esther said she is researching other mausoleums constructed by the Shelby Company to identify comparable restoration projects and potential contractors. Board members emphasized the structure's worsening condition, including water damage and roof issues, and agreed timely action is needed to prevent further deterioration.
The board did not take a final funding vote at the meeting; staff will proceed with the insurance settlement process and follow up with the board on fundraising and grant-application progress.
