The Pine County Board approved personnel committee recommendations including a revision to the community support technician job description to include family work under a forthcoming law, a regrade of the assistant county engineer position (grade 16 to 17) with no immediate pay change, and authorization to backfill vacant corrections and environmental technician positions. The committee said some positions are backfills and staff emphasized hiring decisions can be delayed to manage budget risk.
Commissioners raised concerns about long-term budget pressure and the potential need to delay hires. "As we go down the road, just want us to be aware...it's really painful to have to do cuts, especially for personnel," one commissioner said, urging caution. Personnel committee members explained several actions are backfills that conserve county operations and that filling a long-vacant environmental technician could eliminate contractor costs used for septic inspections.
