Council advances and adopts parking permit for Ability Center parcel at 5023 Skelly
Summary
Sylvania council held a public hearing and approved Ordinance 74-2026 to amend the Ability Center’s SUP to add an adjacent parcel for a parking area and driveway; a nearby neighbor spoke in support on condition the parcel remain a parking lot.
The council opened a public hearing on Special Use Permit 02/2026 to add a vacant parcel adjacent to the Ability Center for parking and driveway access and to rezone that parcel from R-1 to B-2. The Planning Commission had recommended approval prior to the hearing.
Neighbor Barbara Futrell of 5240 Coldstream Road told council, "We're neighbors to the Ability Center...We do support them then," and said she and her husband back the plan so long as the use remains a parking lot and the existing trees behind homes are preserved.
Ash Lemons, executive director of the Ability Center, described the renovation’s accessibility benefits, including a new event center and parking that will reduce the need for pedestrians to cross Monroe Street. Council moved to advance the zoning amendment to the regular agenda and later adopted Ordinance 74-2026 as an emergency measure to permit the driveway and parking area at 5023 Skelly.
