Public raises questions as council opens annexation hearing for 701 Potters Lane

Council held a public hearing on the proposed annexation of a 7.14‑acre tract at 701 Potters Lane, submitted by the Tri County Shriner Club, with staff noting the petition was received March 25 and notice was published April 8. Staff said an ordinance approving annexation will be considered at the May 20 meeting and explained that town code and Indiana law require publication and timing steps before annexation can be finalized.

Jim McIntosh, who identified himself as living at 714 Myers Grove Circle adjoining the Shriner property, asked whether the property would be annexed under the county’s current R‑2 zoning and raised a rumor about townhouses being planned: “The rumor is that there are gonna be townhouses built on this property,” he said, and asked whether a buyer would have to apply for a zone change. Staff replied that zoning designation will be determined when the annexation ordinance is drafted and that the council typically seeks comparable county zoning when bringing property into town. The council closed the hearing after noting one speaker and will return to the matter on May 20.
