The Board of Zoning Appeals voted April 21 to allow four additional exterior wall signs for a Burger King under construction at 1845 W. State St.
Zoning Inspector Shane Howard explained the code (Sec. 1134.06(c)) generally permits two wall signs for the building configuration; the applicant requested permission for a total of six signs and therefore sought a variance. Olivia Sluga, project manager for Allen Industries and representing the applicant, said the company wants signage installed during an upcoming construction window "in July and August" so electricians and the general contractor can accommodate the signs as part of a single build-out tied to Burger King’s national rebranding.
Members cited precedent from recent fast-food remodels and said the requested signage was consistent with similar approvals. Vice Chairman Mike Aeling moved to approve the variance; Herbert Watson seconded. The motion passed with all members present voting in favor.
Olivia Sluga told the board the variance request was timed so sign installation could proceed while construction crews are on site, avoiding a second mobilization. The board did not attach conditions beyond the variance approval recorded in the meeting minutes.
Zoning staff will record the variance and the applicant may proceed with sign permits subject to standard permitting and inspections.
