Stanhope introduces salt‑storage ordinance to meet NJDEP stormwater rules

Mayor Wronko introduced Ordinance 2026-12 on June 9 to adopt Chapter 115, Salt Storage, aligning Stanhope with NJDEP stormwater-management guidance. The draft ordinance limits temporary outdoor loose de-icing material storage to the period between October 15 and April 15, requires loose piles to be on an impervious surface at least 50 feet from storm drains and surface waters, and requires waterproof covers and methods to secure covers against wind.
The draft also encourages use of permanent structures for storage, mandates weekly inspections for sites that store loose materials outdoors and creates an enforcement path with a 72-hour cure period and daily fines up to $1,000 for repeat or persistent violations. The ordinance was introduced for public hearing and final adoption at the June 23 meeting; it follows NJDEP model language and is intended to reduce salt exposure to stormwater.
