Stanhope residents ask council to consider trampoline setback rules after neighbors' dispute

During the public-comment portion of the May 26 meeting, Patricia and George Maxwell asked the Mayor and Council to adopt an ordinance establishing setback requirements for residential trampolines to address safety and liability concerns.
Patricia Maxwell said a neighbor's trampoline is approximately two feet from the Maxwell property line and children "run around the trampoline and crossing the property line which happens frequently," creating both a fall-injury risk and homeowner liability. She provided three photos showing the trampoline's location and a fourth image she said shows the trampoline has become lopsided and unstable.
Borough Attorney Ursula Leo said she is not aware of any existing Stanhope ordinance addressing trampolines specifically beyond general accessory-structure rules and that she could research the legal and enforcement issues, including how boundaries would be determined and how the Code Enforcement Officer would administer any permitting or setbacks. Mayor Wronko and council members said they would review options objectively and the governing body agreed to research possible approaches.
