Council and the DEI Coalition chair, Brian Gibbons, discussed renaming the body and clarifying its duties. Coalition leadership proposed the name "Access and Equity Action Committee" and emphasized continuing existing work. "The name change itself is simply a name change," Gibbons said, stressing the group would not abandon prior responsibilities.
Council members debated whether to strike language in the existing resolution that specifically framed systemic racism as a public-health crisis in favor of broader access-and-equity language. They also requested changes to appointment and meeting language: make interviews suggested rather than mandatory in a public forum, clean up staggered term language, and consider a minimum meeting cadence (quarterly suggested) with flexibility. The council voted to remove the item from committee and directed staff and counsel to draft a revised resolution for council consideration.
