At the Sept. 5 meeting, the company said it received a Northern Border Regional Commission award of $483,000 to buy 14 "Tower Guns," which the presenter said will "make it so we are able to have top to bottom snow making early in the season." The presentation also noted a Congressional direct spending grant of $775,000 to enlarge the water pond, construct a new pump capable of pushing more water to the summit and to extend power to the top of the mountain.
The presenter said the combined work should increase snowmaking capacity and resilience, and gave an operational target of opening the hill by Dec. 15. No formal board vote was required for the update; the board received the report during the meeting's business items.
The grants are intended to support winter operations and local recreation-driven economic activity in Rumford and surrounding communities. The board did not identify additional town funding for the work during the update.
